No matter how you look at it, 2024 is turning out to be quite the year for Channel 7’s Elspeth Hussey.
She’s tied the knot, got the best birthday surprise ever – discovering she was pregnant – and will have an early Christmas present because her bundle of joy is due in late October.
The baby is going to be adorable too, judging by an ultrasound in which he or she is hiccuping in Elspeth’s tummy.
In January the Seven reporter and newsreader married Alastair Dillon at St Mary’s Church, North Adelaide.
The reception was at the SA Museum, with catering by celeb foodie Callum Hann of MasterChef fame.
The bride wore a gown by Adelaide’s Rapsimo, shoes by Christian Louboutin and earrings by Sophie Bille Brahe, while the groom, who works for NAB, donned a traditional dark wedding suit and black bow tie.
The newlyweds honeymooned at Hamilton Island hideaway Qualia, before returning to their Adelaide home and pet pooch, Maggie the Hungarian Vizsla.
Fast-forward to now and the couple are looking forward to having a honeymoon baby.
While Elspeth is half way along in her pregnancy, she has managed to keep mum about it.
“It’s been tough keeping it a secret at work … I’ve disguised the bump behind the desk with black – and lots of borrowed clothes,” she tells us, adding: “A few people at work had their suspicions though. The Maccas fries for lunch was probably a give away.”
Newsreader Rosanna Magiarelli – who knew about Elspeth’s happy news – also catered to her colleague’s cravings, by giving her “little snack packs with chips, yoghurt and freshly baked muffins”.
And there’s been a few sneaky power naps.
“The South Aussie with Cosi office has a little bench seat that’s been great for lie downs,” Elspeth says, adding: “Fortunately, Cosi and the team aren’t in every day.”
The mum-to-be discovered she was expecting rather unexpectedly.
“A few weeks after the wedding, we went out for drinks for my birthday and I ordered a bottle of my favourite champagne – but it tasted like metal,” Elspeth recalls.
“My friends said, ‘Oh my god, you’re pregnant!’. I thought the bottle must’ve been corked but I went home and did a test and it was positive. I was jumping around the bathroom. It was the best birthday present I’ve ever had.”
While Elspeth and Alastair know the gender of their baby, they have decided to keep that to themselves, but will say that they have a shortlist of five names.
There must be something in the water at Channel 7 with reporter Kimberley Pratt also announcing she’s expecting, while weather presenter Amelia Mulcahy is returning to work soon after having her second bub.
