A train station, a classic car and Daniel Radcliffe – it sounds like a movie we’ve seen before. But what the Chamber of Secrets holds this time is the British actor’s new drama, being filmed right here at a southern Adelaide station.

Imagine you had walked through the portal to platform nine and three quarters and instead of arriving at a windswept platform in London, you appear in Mitcham.

That was the scene on Wednesday as Harry Potter star and acting juggernaut Daniel Radcliffe began filming his latest project on location in the southern suburbs.

Daniel Radcliffe’s Escape From Pretoria is set in South Africa in 1979 but will have scenes filmed at Mitcham Station.

Radcliffe, 29, has been spotted all around Adelaide over the past two weeks as filming begins for the eagerly anticipated drama Escape from Pretoria.

Inspired by a real prison escape in 1979, Radcliffe plays a white South African activist imprisoned for working with the ANC, who breaks out of the brutal Robben Island Prison.

Wednesday’s filming took cast and crew to Mitcham train station to capture outdoor scenes complete with era appropriate clothing, smoke machines and a classic Valiant car.
