Australia’s answer to Miranda Hart, Jennifer Anne Laycock has the type of enthralling stage presence that demands unwavering attention.
Going in blind to Plastica Fantastica provides one of those deliciously offbeat Fringe experiences you simply couldn’t predict. Set in a pleasantly intimate yet buzzy pub venue away from the chaos of the Garden, Laycock weaves the shambolic tale of a tragic-yet-sweet woman who transitions from plastic-obsessed to eco-warrior through a series of bizarre occurrences.
A bold, retro slapstick-tinged and overall wholesome performance that hits decidedly differently from anything else on offer this Fringe, Laycock is a stellar actress born for the spotlight.
Think Derry Girls’ Saoirse-Monica Jackson-level facial animation, enough charisma to fill a stadium and warmth that has you hooked from start-to-finish, even when the plot line goes a little haywire.
Plastica Fantastica might be little bit naff – or cheugy, if you will – but it’s fun, easy watching with an important message.
