Southern beachgoers can now tan on the sand and drink their cocktails, too, at Port Noarlunga’s first beach bar.

Cabana Beach Club caters a stretch of sand in front of Horta’s Restaurant, on the corner of Saltfleet St and the Esplanade. Restaurant owners, Filipe and Paula Horta will serve food and drinks from the ground-level Foreshore Kiosk.

“We licensed the kiosk downstairs, and we have a big kitchen there as well. By doing that we can serve the beach,” Mr Horta said.

There are 30 day beds for hire within the 35x7m section of beach, available upon spending $10 at the kiosk. “You can go to the beach, ask for a coffee and two ice creams for the kids, put your bags down and feel comfortable being served,” Mr Horta said.

Other menu items include burgers, salt and pepper squid and vegetarian skewers. All drinks are served in compostable cups.

Cabana Beach follows on from the successfully-run Cabana Club, a mini outdoor venue featuring live music, licensed for 200 people.

Cabana Beach, which is licensed for 50 people, will run weekends until December 15, every day during the school holidays, then weekends again until March 1.

It’s a much smaller set-up to the Moseley Beach Club, at Glenelg, which is licensed for 350 and features a purpose-built bar on the sand. Moseley Beach Club returns on December 9.

Cabana Beach was approved through Onkaparinga Council’s foreshore activation for summer 2019-20, and has the potential to continue for two years.

“The council has been really proactive,” Mr Horta said, adding that Cabana Club and Cabana Beach would generate 19 summer jobs.

“It’s a real good vibe … people are enjoying Port Noarlunga again.”
