Coronavirus SA: Police issue first fines for breaking self-isolation rules

South Australian police have slapped heavy fines on two people they say broke quarantine rules. And more will follow if others don’t do the right thing.

Coronavirus: Will Australia's hospitals get overrun by COVID-19?

Two people have been slapped with $1000 on-the-spot fines for flouting self-quarantine rules in South Australia.

They are the first people to be issued with expiation notices under the state’s coronavirus self-isolation rules.

SA Police has confirmed the fines, saying they will “continue to strictly monitor compliance and may issue fines for noncompliance”.

“SA Police have been conducting a large number of compliance checks on a daily basis, and a small number were found to have not been compliant,” police said in a statement.

“All of those people were provided with information to educate and reinforce in no uncertain terms how important and critical it is that they do comply with the requirements of self-quarantine.

“As of today, two fines have been issued for noncompliance with a Direction.”

Police have the power to issue $1000 fines to individuals and $5000 fines to businesses who breach self-isolation rules.
