Romeo’s Foodland Mawson Lakes have confirmed their closure and will be the latest business to close at Capital St Shopping Centre

The Capital St Shopping Centre will become more of a ghost town after the closure announcement of a popular shopping chain next month.

Mawson Lakes locals say it was only a matter of time before the Romeo’s Foodland closed due to “bad location.”

After seven years, the northern suburbs supermarket will shut up shop for good at the end of this month, staff confirmed on Monday.

A man who works nearby and wished to remain anonymous said while the closure was sad, it’s not surprising.

“I saw [the news] on Facebook only a few days ago and since then, this is the first time I’ve walked in there and there’s lots of empty shelves.

“Every time I come here, it’s very quiet so I can understand why they are closing it.

“It’s a great shopping centre, but you can see with all the little shops already closed, no one comes here.

“There’s a Woolworths and Aldi in Mawson Lakes in their small shopping centre there and it’s always packed but here, it’s just a bad location.”

Another regular at the store on Wednesday said it was a “real bugger” that it was closing.

“It’s a shame because we live close, we shop here a lot and like coming here,” he said.

Similarly another shopper passing by said while she wasn’t a regular, it was still sad to see the store go.

“I was just driving by and pop in from time to time on my way home but it’s a really nice store, so it’s sad that it’s closing.”

Romeo’s Foodland joins a string of other businesses within the Capital St Shopping Centre to shut their doors recently, including A Little Bit of Mexico, Gotcha Fresh Tea and Cafe 159.

From July, the Terrywhite Chemmart and R3 Pilates studio will be the only businesses open in the centre.

The Advertiser understands efforts are being made by Romeo’s to relocate Mawson Lakes staff.

Salisbury City Councillor Beau Brug said the closure would be a great loss to the community and has reached out to Romeo’s to reconsider.

“Thinking of everyone affected by this news. I understand that attempts are being made to redeploy workers if possible to other stores,” he posted on Facebook.

“I understand that the Mawson Lakes store will be closing for good, at the end of June 2024.

“I have written to Romeo’s and asked them to reconsider, and I am awaiting a reply.

“Thank you to Romeos for being a part of our community.”

Romeo’s has been contacted for comment.
