A “cherished” country golf course will have players teeing off for the final time this month, as it prepares to close for good.

Hatherleigh Golf Course, between Beachport and Millicent on the Limestone Coast, will shut at the end of this month after almost half a century.

Hatherleigh Sport and Recreation Committee president Tim Merrett said the nine-hole, par-three course had provided great memories and camaraderie over the years, but it was time to face the “challenging reality”.

“Despite the dedication and support of our members, we have been unable to reverse the trend of declining membership and escalating maintenance costs,” Mr Merrett said.

“These financial challenges have placed a significant strain on the overall financial viability of the Hatherleigh Sport and Recreation Committee.

“After careful consideration and thorough evaluation of our options, we have made the difficult decision to close the Hatherleigh Golf Course.”

Mr Merrett said the Hatherleigh Sport and Recreation Committee and the Wattle Range Council were exploring alternative options for the golf course land, including sell it off.

The public course was built nearly 50 years ago, with the assistance Millicent District Council grants and support from the local community and Hatherleigh Football Club.

First opening in 1976, the course’s bushland setting amid Australian native fauna and flora has been highly regarded by regulars and tourists.

The course and accompanying golf club will cease operations upon the expiry of current memberships on June 30.

To celebrate the course’s legacy, the golf club will hosting a final competition – the Phil Keatley Cup Ambrose golf competition – on June 23.

Registration begins at 12:30 that day with a tee time set for 2pm.

Locals shared their sadness about the upcoming closure on social media.

“Very sad news, we play there every time we stay at Beachport. Such a lovely course for someone who doesn't play elsewhere. Will never forget the day a crow stole my golf ball,” one user shared.

“Very sad, beautiful little par 3 course. Got a hole in one there one day, was great going out there after night shift in the peace and quiet. Played there many times,” said another.

Mr Merrett on behalf of the club extended gratitude to members for their support, dedication and contributions over the years.

“Your commitment to the Hatherleigh Golf Club has been the cornerstone of its success, and we are proud of the memories, friendships, and experiences shared on the greens,” Mr Merrett said.

Wattle Range Council has been contacted for comment.
