The small Mid North town of Owen is set to be the latest regional South Australian town to feature silo art.
Coonalpyn was the first SA town to paint its town silos in 2017, with Kimba, Tumby Bay, Waikerie, Karoonda, Wirrabara and Cowell following. Illuminated art has also been added to the Quorn silos.
Owen’s silo art is part of a trio of projects to activate and revive spaces across the Wakefield Regional Council area.
The projects have been given the green light as part of the Federal Government’s Drought Communities Programme extension.
There will be $100,000 going towards the Owen Silo Artwork Project, with the town’s silos becoming the canvas for artwork designed by renowned artist Robert (Alf) Hannaford AM and painted by experienced silo painter Cam Scale.
The artwork will honour the early farming history of the Owen district.
Other projects to be funded include $350,000 for the Blyth Cinema expansion and car park upgrade and $550,000 to activate the main streets of Hamley Bridge and Balaklava.

No timelines are in place yet for the projects, due to COVID-19 restrictions.
Mayor Rodney Reid said these projects could ”game changers” for the region.
“They will attract people to the area, engage local contractors (where possible) and stimulate the economy,” he said.
“The Owen community has invested significant time, energy and fundraising efforts to bring the (silo art) project to life.”
