LIKE so many other events, the Victorian Interschool Championships fell foul of the 2020 curse.

Usually 500 young riders from prep to Year 12 would crowd Werribee Park to compete for their schools in a wide range of equestrian disciplines including eventing.

At least the recent easing of restrictions meant a dedicated group managed to conduct a minimised set of competitions for riders Year 10 to Year 12, who may be in their last year of being able to compete. Many have ridden every year since prep, and it’s a much-loved event.

So in perfect conditions, the 2020 Senior Vic Interschool hosted 135 happy youngsters in dressage, showjumping, combined training and show horse.

In combined training, Liesel Wright-Smith was the two-star champion riding for Toorak College and Georgia Tivendale took the one-star prize riding for St Margaret’s School.

Abby Port from Ave Maria College was the 95cm winner and Charlotte Richardson won both the 80cm and 60cm section for Catholic College Wodonga.

Dressage is always hard fought with only points separating placegetters and the novice dressage winner was Grace Riddell, Bacchus Marsh Grammar, the elementary dressage winner, Taleah Cameron, Mornington Secondary College,

The advanced dressage winner was Maddison Growcott, Chairo Christian College just a point ahead of Amy Bachmann for Girton Grammar in a close finish, Ballarat Clarendon Collge provided the winner and runner up in the Intermediate 1 won by Kelsey Josephs from Indi Officer.

In showjumping the winners were at 75cm, Grace Perkins Lavella College at 90cm, Emily Manuell Braeur College, the 100cm winner was Rosie Maiden, Sacred Heart College Geelong. The 110cm was Grace Perkins from Lavalla Catholic College and the 120cm Mikayla Hogg, Virtual School Victoria.

In the show horse group, the working hunter winner was Charlotte Richardson from Catholic College Wodonga, and she also took the trophy for the best show hunter. Daizi Plumb won the show horse section for St Margaret’s School.
