Yackandandah is locked in a wide open race for the Tallangatta and District league premiership this season.
Coach Darren Holmes said the club was determined to make up for the disappointment of missing finals last year and has made a great start to this season by climbing to second spot on the ladder.
The Roos claimed their biggest scalp of the season on Saturday when they responded to losing the lead midway through the final quarter to beat another flag contender, Beechworth.
Beechworth bowed out in the preliminary final last year with Chiltern beating Kiewa-Sandy Creek in the grand final.
Kiewa-Sandy Creek is on top of the ladder with a tough run of matches to start after this weekend’s bye.
The Hawks play Beechworth, Yackandandah and Mitta United.
Yackandandah plays fourth-placed Mitta United next round and hopes to regain ruckman Zac Leitch from a back injury.
“Zac is a real impact player and we need him fit and firing,” Holmes said.
Tallangatta, presently sitting sixth, can’t be discounted from playing finals after beating Mitta United a fortnight ago.
