Leitchville Gunbower win for first time since last year

A country club ended its drought with a win over not only their rivals but last year’s premiers. Find out how the club did it.

Leitchville Gunbower is daring to dream of finals, even though its win on Saturday was the end of a long drought.

The Bombers won for the first time in 20 Heathcote District league matches, beating last year’s premiers Lockington Bamawm United by 25 points.

“Someone said to me on Saturday night ‘I’ve never heard of a wooden spooners knocking off last year’s premiers’,” Bombers president Rob Gundry said.

“We’ve got a good group of young guys, they played one or two quarters here and there of good football but couldn’t sustain it for four quarters.

“Locky were a bit undermanned so it was a good chance for us to knock them off.”

In their best performance of the season, the Bombers produced a four-quarter performance to end a barren run.

The team won for the first time since Round 1, last year, against Huntly.

Importantly, they won with the addition of a couple of handy players.

They’ve added Caleb and Zachary Hislop from Aberfeldie in the Essendon District Football League with Nathan McLellan, who finished runner-up in the last two club best and fairest for the club, returning after being overseas.

“They (Hislop’s) were bloody awesome, they both played really well,” Gundry said.

“We’ve got them for the rest of the year.

“These two guys that we got on the weekend were just what we were looking for.

“Bigger bodies and bit more maturity we’ve been lacking to help the younger guys out.”

Gundry said the team was now looking to build on the win and try to rise up the ladder to fight for a spot in the finals in the top-five.

Two of their next three games, according to the president, are winnable, which would put the team in a good position heading into the second half of the season.

“(The win) gives us a real belief and 5th is not out of the question,” Gundry said.

“There’s a real opportunity for the fifth spot.

“If we can get things right, we are right into it.”
