Old Scotch has kept itself firmly in contention in the VAFA Premier Women’s competition with a convincing victory over Fitzroy at W.T. Peterson Oval.

Scotch kept their opponents scoreless through three quarters with a dominant defensive performance, while hitting the scoreboard plenty themselves to come away the four points.

The Lions were able to salvage some pride with a pair of late goals to give the local fans something to cheer for, with the final score reading 6.7 (43) to 2.0 (12).

In the reserves, Fitzroy staved off a valiant Old Scotch outfit to keep its undefeated season intact, prevailing 4.3 (27) to 4.1 (25).

While Scotch made a late push in the fourth quarter, even winning a free kick just outside 50 in the dying seconds, the Lions held strong to ultimately hang on by the slimmest of margins.

PREVIEW

Everything Fitzroy does this season is all about the future.

After being promoted to the Premier Women’s competition, the Roy Girls have unleashed a side stacked with under-21 talent as they look to become a powerhouse in the top tier.

There have been plenty of positives to start the season with Fitzroy currently sitting fifth on the ladder with a 3-2 record.

Coach Nathan Jumeau and his side will face their biggest test yet on Saturday when they host reigning premier Old Scotch.

The game will be live streamed on KommunityTV in a double header starting with the reserves at 11.50am.

“We’re looking to grow each week,” Jumeau said.

“Majority of our list is under-21 who have been really talented junior footballers. The next step is to teach them to become great senior footballers.

“They’re really starting to believe they belong at this level after some really encouraging performances.”

The Roy Girls will enter the Old Scotch game after two straight wins over Williamstown CYMS and Old Yarra Cobras.

Those results follow a 16-point defeat to competition powerhouse St Kevin’s.

“It’s always good for us to play the good teams and test ourselves,” Jumeau said.

“One of the biggest lessons we’ve learned is you can’t afford to have lapses because the good teams will punish you.

“Our good has been good enough to compete against anyone.”

Fitzroy has had several impressive performers to start the season including young gun Olivia Brilliant who has been named in the best on four occasions.

“She’s taken her game to another level,” Jumeau said.

Others to have caught the eye so far include Grace Painting, Maddie Smith, Jaime Nelson and Maddison Carter.

Jumeau said experienced players in defence had helped to set the Roy Girls up structurally.
