TWO of Australia’s best known champion racehorses met each other for the first time, competing in another sport last weekend.

Chautauqua and Hartnell, have both won 13 major races, both have won for their owners millions of dollars in prizemoney, and both looked magnificent and were crowd pleasers at the Show Horse Council of Victoria’s Horse of the Year show while competing in the Led Thoroughbred class.

Hartnell, in the care of Sheralee Patterson, daughter of famous Flemington Clerk of The Course, John Patterson was thrilled with the horse’s win in the class.

Describing him as well-mannered and loving a challenge, Sheralee was thrilled with the win, where two of the three judges chose him as their winner.

“I was shaking, “she said “I thought I might cry.”

Chautauqua placed fourth in the strong class.

“His manners have room for improvement, but this is one happy mumma, finishing fourth in a huge class and even better seeing my friend and competitor Sheralee and Hartnell taking the win,’’ handler Casey Bruce said.

The big dapple grey settled down and worked immaculately later in the day to take out second place in the Fashions on the Field Class.
