Australian riders impress in trials showdowns
Andrew Hoy and fellow Olympians make their mark in eventing competitions on both sides of the world.
AUSTRALIAN horse trials riders have been successful on both sides of the world in the past week.
In Germany, at the rescheduled German Eventing Championships at Luhmuhlen, Andrew Hoy on his WEG mount Vassily de Lassos placed third in a strong field with riders competing from several countries.
He was thrilled with the performance of the Anglo Arabian horse, describing him as his best friend, partner in crime and a horse that dreams are made of.
Hoy was placed ninth after dressage with a score of just 28.7 points; two immaculate clear rounds in cross country and show jumping moved him up to third place behind Ingrid Klimke riding SAP Asha and Sandra Auffarth and Viamant du Matz.
In Australia at the Canberra Horse Trials, two-times Olympic medal winner Stuart Tinney won the CNC four-star class riding Elisabeth Brinton’s Celebration leading from start to finish.
The combination won the Melbourne International Three Day Event and Sydney Trials in 2019 and Tinney is aiming the horse for Tokyo selection.
The strong field included Beijing silver medallist and fellow Olympian, Shane Rose finished in second place riding Easy Turn and dual Adelaide Horse Trials winner, Hazel Shannon riding Willinga Park Clifford finished third.
UK-based Paul Tapner has decided to retire after suffering a serious head injury after a simple fall while out hacking.
He represented Australia twice at the World Equestrian Games.
