The most comprehensive list of farm ownership in the nation, Who Owns NSW.

Billionaires, North American pension funds and some of Australia’s most prominent pastoral families have claimed stakes in NSW farmland, according to The Weekly Times’ 10th annual Who Owns Australia’s Farm investigation.

Leading the list of landholders is the Brinkworth family, whose Willoway Farming operation spans 903,000 hectares across far western NSW and the Riverina. Their holdings include Frome Downs and Lakeside stations near Broken Hill (608,000 hectares), Uardry Station near Hay (35,000 hectares), and the Western Lands Division Aggregation of 10 farms near White Cliffs (260,000 hectares).

Ranked second is Macquarie Agriculture, Australia’s second-largest investor in farmland, with more than 505,000 hectares in the state. Macquarie’s Paraway Pastoral business accounts for 478,510 hectares of NSW farmland, including the iconic Riverina stations Mungadal (116,994 hectares) and Cooinbil (89,040 hectares). Its crops-focused Viridis Ag operation covers 26,600 hectares of NSW.

Rounding out the top three is Canada’s PSP Investments, with a statewide footprint of 418,061 hectares.

As the largest investor in Australian agriculture, PSP Investments holds extensive farmland and water assets across multiple states through various joint ventures. Their Hewitt Cattle Australia business covers 198,352 hectares in NSW, including the 127,337-hectare Tandou Station near Menindee, alongside its Australian Food and Fibre (118,892 hectares), Altora Ag (96,170 hectares across 36 aggregations), Southern Premium Vineyards (2546 hectares), and Stahmann Webster (2100 hectares).

Who owns Australia?

Other major landholders include the Australian-US owned Australian Food and Fibre (225,405 hectares), US teacher superannuation fund TIAA-CREF and its Nuveen Natural Capital subsidiary (129,600 hectares), the Murray family of Trilby Station at Louth (129,500 hectares), and the MacLachlan family’s Jumbuck Pastoral business, which owns the 112,000-hectare Gunbar Station in the Riverina.

Well-known business identities with significant farming assets across NSW include billionaire Gina Rinehart, Australian-born UK Lord Michael Hintze, Fletcher International Exports boss Roger Fletcher, as well as the rich-lister Packer and Murdoch families.
