Almost 178 years old and in robust health: that’s Murrindindi Station in north-east Victoria, one of the state’s most historic landmark estates widely regarded for its Victorian-era homestead, original structural improvements and prime agricultural land.

Located 12km south of Yea, the property includes nine certificates of title, grand gardens and dual frontages of 8km and 2km respectively to the Yea and Murrindindi Rivers.

First taken up in 1837 by pastoralist and politician Peter Snodgrass, the land was sold in 1844 to Scotsman Alex Miller as two separate holdings known as Murrindinda and Murrindindi, collectively spanning over 40,000 acres.

Miller built one section of the present homestead four years later using local uncut stone for the foundations and sun-dried bricks for walls, with the older part of the house, the woolshed (1881) and stable and coach house all now bearing a National Trust classification.

To say the homestead sits in a “parklike setting” is no trite boast, with the grounds featuring a rose garden first established in 1881, manicured hedges and statues, vine-covered arbour, lush lawns, established trees, a 30-tree orchard and river red gums believed to be 400-500 years old.

There’s also a swimming pool with cabana, en-tout-cas tennis court, automated water irrigation system, four-bay carport, greenhouse and extensive irrigated vegetable area.

The Colonial-era homestead is set over two levels, with the ground floor providing two bedrooms, two bathrooms, kitchen/meals area with two walk-in pantries, family room, formal living and dining rooms, sitting room and alfresco deck.

The master suite is on the first floor, featuring an ensuite, generous walk-in robe, retreat space and private balcony.

Three separate, recently renovated staff/guest residences are close by, plus a manager’s cottage and workshop with kitchenette, powder room and laundry.

Other infrastructure includes the original (c. 1844) stone stables with tack room, four-stand wool/shearing shed, hay/machinery shed and cattle yards with covered working areas.

The owners have successfully carried 350 breeders, plus followers, on the property’s heavy-carrying alluvial river flats and low hills, with pastures extensively improved through a selection of ryegrasses, phalaris, rape and sub-clovers.

An abundant natural water supply is assured thanks to access to the Yea and Murrindindi Rivers, eight catchment dams and a 130,000-litre header tank which gravity-feeds troughs throughout the property.

Average annual rainfall is a reliable 843mm (33”).

Fencing has been renovated to a high standard and a centralised laneway system ensures easy movement of stock.
