IN AN isolated location, with just under 600ha of pasture and natural coastal bushland, is a unique opportunity.

Adjoining Lake Reeve/Ninety Mile Beach, at Longford in Gippsland, you will find Sentosa, a coastal wilderness currently operating as a safari game hunting park.

John Jansen bought the property 30 years ago and set it up as a deer hunting and pheasant shooting operation. He and his wife Anna are now planning to retire.

Over the years, Sentosa has been developed into its current form with thoughtful retention of large tracts of natural bush land providing shelter and refuge for the property’s wildlife and livestock.

Undulating grasslands sustain both the herd of Angus breeders and the resident population of multiple species of deer for which the property is world famous. Carrs Creek meanders through the property, its deep lagoons providing sheltered watering points for wildlife, before emptying into Lake Reeve.

John has made many improvements to the property over time.

“When we bought, there was nothing there, it was just a sheep farm,” John said.

The property includes cabin accommodation, camping and clubroom facilities, a designated rifle and clay target range and observation towers.

There is also a three bedroom home, shedding and cattle yards. The property is virtually entirely deer-fenced and includes a large-scale enclosure for pheasant and game bird breeding.

John also runs about 200 cows and some sheep on the property.

Selling agent Tracey Wrigglesworth, from Elders Sale, said Sentosa’s isolated location, facilities and infrastructure meant it would be suitable for further development, or as a tourism operation or a farming operation.

“It’s a unique property,” she said.

It is also being marketed internationally.

“John did have a lot of international guests. For what it is and for the money it could appeal to an international buyer,” Ms Wrigglesworth said.

While the business and the animals aren’t for sale, John said if a potential buyer was interested in purchasing the animals and continue to run the property as a safari park he would consider offers.
