Australia has seen 'ideal growing conditions' despite repeat flooding

A renowned New Zealand farming family with more than 90 years of ram breeding experience is selling the South West Victorian home of their Australian Romney sheep stud.

The Daniell family, who own and run Wairere Romney stud are offloading their 1156ha three-farm aggregation near Heywood as they finish up their Australian farming pursuits.

Offers for the aggregation are tipped to reach about $17.5-$18.5 million.

In 2015 the Daniell family via their Wairere Romney sheep stud enterprise bought the three farms as they expanded from their base at Masterton, near Wellington on New Zealand’s North Island.

Shortly after the acquisition Wairere sent 190 ewes to Australia via airfreight and followed this with two years of multiple ovulation embryo transfers.

Wairere Romneys has history dating back to 1929 when Len Daniell started the Akoura Romney stud.

Nutrien Harcourts Warrnambool selling agent Neil Hammond said the aggregation was likely to attract the interest of corporate investors, large-scale farming families and smaller farming families who might be interested in a slice.

“The level of development at Wairere is second to none. It truly is a turn-key operation where the buyer can walk straight in,” Mr Hammond said.

Located at 6405 Woolsthorpe-Heywood Rd, Heywood, the aggregation comprises three holdings, Wairere (268ha), Ettrick (388ha) and Ettrick Moor (495ha) which are partially adjoining among neighbouring farms.

The property has the capacity to carry 17,000 dry sheep equivalent through winter, normally carrying about 5450 ewes, 1500 ram hoggets, 2200 ewe hoggets (with 400-500 dry hoggets sold in late July) 150 rams and killers for a total of about 9300 sheep.

About 360 cows and 60 trade cattle, with an eye to selling most weaners, are normally carried as part of the Wairere cattle herd.

Wairere has 32 paddocks and a four-stand woolshed while Ettrick also has a four-stand woolshed, 37 paddocks and a three-bedroom home with a two-bedroom sleep-out.

Ettrick Moor has 10 paddocks and is suitable for cattle wintering thanks to its portion of stone country.

Mr Hammond this stone country had allowed Wairere to protect their pastures during winter and increase stock numbers.

“Also it has allowed Wairere to take advantage of winter cattle markets as they can they can buy cattle and place them on the stone country and they don’t have to compromise their pasture production,” he said.

At Wairere all paddocks go through a summer cropping program before being sown down to perennial rye and clover mixes on a range of soil types including red clay loams, clay loams and stony barrier country.

Fencing, water and stock handling infrastructure are also features of the property, which has had more than $1.5 million spent on infrastructure in the last five years.

The Wairere Australia stud business has been sold to the Ranken family at Hexham, who run maternal composite ram breeding operation Boonerah.

Rural property in Victoria’s South West has also been in the headlines recently with the Habersberger family selling the historic Dalvui Homestead and the Anderson family offloading their 10-property Rossander aggregation for more than $35 million combined.
