A WESTERN District property once home to the founding chairman of Victoria’s TAB has been sold for an undisclosed amount.

Elders confirmed Talindert Homestead, 5km east of Camperdown, sold to a Melbourne family in recent weeks before being advertised for sale.

Agents would not disclose the price being sought when The Weekly Times revealed it was on the market in September. However, land in the Camperdown region fetches about $12,500 a hectare — pushing the property past the $8 million mark.

The 33-room stucco-and-brick mansion was designed by Colac architect Alex Hamilton and is the home of James Manifold’s son, Sir Chester, who established the TAB in 1961.

Cementing its Thoroughbred reputation is the Talindert Stakes, named by Sir Chester after his property, which has been staged by the Victoria Racing Club at Flemington for decades.

The property, which covers more than 680ha, was sold by Sir Chester’s daughter, Sally Emanuel and her family.

Mrs Emanuel and her late husband, Tim, owned the property until the death of the West Australian pastoralist in 2014.

Historic properties sold in southwest Victoria in recent months include Timboon House, near Camperdown, and Rosebank Homestead in Terang, both to overseas buyers.
