Talindert Homestead eyed off by property punters
Talindert Homestead, once home to the founding chairman of TAB Sir Chester Manifold, is already being eyed off by keen property punters.
PROPERTY punters are already expressing interest in a Western District property once home to the founding chairman of Victoria’s TAB.
Talindert Homestead, 5km east of Camperdown, was established by Corangamite MP James Manifold in 1890 on the foothills of Mount Leura.
The 33-room stucco-and-brick mansion was designed by Colac architect Alex Hamilton and is best known as the home of James Manifold’s son Sir Chester, who established the Totalisator Agency Board in 1961.
Cementing its thoroughbred reputation is the Talindert Stakes, named by Sir Chester after his property, which has been staged by the Victoria Racing Club at Flemington for decades.
The property, which covers more than 680 hectares (1700 acres), is to be sold by Sir Chester’s daughter, Sally Emanuel and her family.

Mrs Emanuel and her late husband, Tim, jointly owned the property until the death of the West Australian pastoralist in July 2014.
Sources have told The Weekly Times thata number of property owners have already expressed interest in the historic property although it is yet to be listed for public sale.
Most of the property has been leased to adjacent farmers with the Manifold/Emanuel family still using the Italianate mansion until recently.
Agents would not disclose the price being sought but land in the Camperdown region fetches about $12,500 a hectare — pushing the property past the $8 million mark.
Talindert hosted many Camperdown fundraisers and garden parties in the 1950s and 60s.
Its most notable guest was Princess Alexandra of Kent, the first cousin of Queen Elizabeth II, in 1959.
