Buyers sought for Nestle’s Tongala milk processing factory

Expressions of interest are now being sought for a dairy processing plant where Nestle used to make tinned milk. That’s not the only drawcard of the unique property, which spans five titles and 78ha in a northern Victorian township.

The Nestle factory at Tongala has been placed on the market, 15 months after the announcement on its closure.

THE Nestle dairy factory at Tongala has been placed on the market.

CBRE is calling for expressions of interest from potential buyers for the 23,000 square metre processing plant on 78 hectares at the edge of the northern Victoria township.

The sale includes plant and equipment and its own water treatment facility.

The factory was used to manufacture tinned milk, but was expanded to produce the Maggi culinary range of foods in 2010, medical nutritional products in 2012 and its iconic Milo brand three years ago.

Nestle announced in August last year that it was progressively closing the factory by February, 2021, with the manufacture of its products and associated equipment moved overseas.

CBRE industrial and logistics senior director Rory Hilton said the site was still operational, with production still scheduled to wind up early to mid next year.

Mr Hilton said it could be sold as a whole or under separate titles.

“It’s a pretty unique site,” he said.

Currently, there are five separate titles comprising the 78ha.

That includes 51.3ha described as a “rural lifestyle allotment” but currently used as an irrigated farmlet.

The block includes a four-bedroom house built about 1990 and six small paddocks, plus the holding dam which serviced the water treatment plant for the dairy factory.

The dairy operation includes a liquid milk processing division, powders warehouse and finished goods warehouse, along with a two-storey administration block.

Interested buyers must lodge their submissions to CBRE by 4pm on December 17 and include the price offered and intended use.
