WorkSafe takes action against transport company following grain death
A Sale trucking company has been named and will face court regarding a grain transport accident that resulted in the death of a 60-year old.
A transport company will face court at Sale later this month after a 60-year old died in a grain industry accident at Maffra.
The 60-year-old man suffered head injuries and died after falling about four metres when a guard rail failed while he was inspecting hatches on top of the truck.
WorkSafe has issued a statement saying the employer D & A Martin Transport Pty Ltd is facing a single charge under section 21(1) of the Occupational Health and Safety Act for failing to provide and maintain a safe working environment.
It is alleged the company failed to implement a qualified inspection and maintenance regimen for the guard rails and failed to ensure they were repaired or replaced when faulty.
The matter is listed for a filing hearing at Sale Magistrates’ Court on September 12.
The rate of farm deaths in Australia spiked by almost 20 per cent last year.
