Parts of NSW record six months of rain in six weeks

Parts of southern NSW have recorded almost half their annual rainfall totals in the first six weeks of the year. See what areas have benefited — and who has missed out.

PARTS of southern NSW have recorded almost half their annual rainfall totals in the first six weeks of the year.

An analysis of figures from the Bureau of Meteorology show several centres closing in on 50 per cent of their average total after good rainfall across most parts of southeast Australia in the past fortnight.

West Wyalong is leading the charge with 201mm since January 1 – representing 46 per cent of its 432mm 12-month total, followed by Condobolin (182mm or 45 per cent of its annual total), Forbes (215mm or 45 per cent), Ivanhoe (96mm or 41 per cent), Cobar (136mm or 41 per cent) and Lake Cargelligo (158mm or 38 per cent).

Other NSW centres to have recorded more than a quarter of their annual totals already during 2021 include Mt Hope (146mm), Bourke (101mm), Temora (165mm), Hillston (112mm), Mungindi (147mm), Wagga Wagga (163mm), Narrandera (119mm), Parkes (173mm), Cootamundra (160mm), Dunedoo (165mm), Collarenebri (134mm) and Young (148mm).

In Victoria, the best falls compared to the long-term 12-month average have been at Stawell (112mm or 24 per cent), Omeo (150mm or 24 per cent), Rutherglen (128mm or 22 per cent), Avalon (97mm or 21 per cent), Westmere (121mm or 21 per cent), Gelantipy (161mm or 21 per cent) and Yarram (149mm or 21 per cent).

Meanwhile, good rain across most parts of NSW in the past week has given summer crops a boost adding valuable moisture to the soil ahead of the planting of winter crops in autumn.

Among the best falls in the seven days to 9am yesterday were recorded at Quambone (98mm), West Wyalong (97mm), Cowra (90mm), Ungarie (88mm), Cooma (87mm), Bombala (83mm), Gunnedah (80mm), Dunedoo and Gundagai (78mm), Wagga Wagga (75mm), Young (74mm), Bourke (72mm), Forbes and Trangie (71mm) and Parkes (69mm).

In Victoria, the best falls were in the North East and Gippsland. Mitta Mitta recorded 110mm for the week while other notable falls were recorded at Mallacoota (80mm), Chiltern (76mm), Hinnomunjie (70mm), Gelantipy (64mm), Omeo (62mm), Yarck (61mm), Ensay (60mm), Wangaratta (59mm), Rutherglen (50mm), Warragul and Yarrawonga (44mm), Darnum (41mm) and Barnawartha (40mm).
