Victoria to get new corella management plan

Bureaucrats are working on a corella management plan, Victorian Environment Minister Lily D’Ambrosio says, with details to be announced soon.

Birdwatching bureaucrats have cacophonous corellas in their sights with a statewide management plan on the cards.

Victorian Environment Minister Lily D’Ambrosio confirmed in a letter to Lowan MP Emma Kealy that a bird blueprint is being prepared, although a release date is to be confirmed.

The Arthur Rylah Institute for Environmental Research estimates statewide populations of 5.2 million long-billed corellas and 2.9 million little corellas.

Ms Kealy, who represents the Hamilton and Horsham regions in state parliament, said corellas were not only a nuisance in her constituency, but further afield.

“Corellas are wreaking havoc on sports grounds, bowling greens, public parks and golf courses,” she said.

“But our local community group calls for the Andrews Labor Government’s help to fix the problems are falling on deaf ears.

“Without a comprehensive management plan, the cost burden to clean up the damage will continue to fall on our volunteer-run clubs who just don’t have the means to fund regular repairs on grounds and greens.”

Ms D’Ambrosio’s office was contacted by The Weekly Times but did not respond in time for deadline.
