Running for Archie

With their little boy Archie their “inspiration”, Bendigo parents Emily and Mitch Kennedy have built a team for this weekend’s Herald Sun Run For The Kids.

After their little boy was diagnosed with a rare liver condition last year, Bendigo parents Emily and Mitch Kennedy began spending much of their time at The Royal Children’s Hospital.

The incredible care and treatment their son Archie received has them encouraging others to donate ahead of this weekend’s Herald Sun Run For The Kids.

Archie, 13 months, was diagnosed with biliary atresia at about four weeks old, a condition causing blockages that prevent bile from flowing into the intestine, instead building up in the liver and causing damage.

As there is no cure, Archie underwent a procedure at 46 days old with the hope of connecting the liver directly to the small intestine. It was unsuccessful, meaning Archie will likely require a liver transplant and be an ongoing patient at RCH.

Emily said RCH have been “amazing” for their family over the past year.

“There’s just no other place like it … I’m sure everyone else says the same thing, but it’s just so professional and organised,” she said.

“We are so grateful for (Archie’s) amazing team who go above and beyond to ensure his health is stable and his quality of life is as best as it can be.”

Emily and Mitch have been met with incredible support from their community, with ‘Archie’s Army’ raising over $3000 already.

“Often our friends and family are asking how they can help, so (fundraising) is just our way of giving the hospital something,” she said.

Mitch will be completing the 14.4km long course with five others, while Emily will be gathering a little crew to cheer on the team.

“Mitch just mentioned it to the boys over a couple of beers, and it started out with one or two and now it’s grown to six.”

“Mitch is the runner, I am the support crew, and Archie is the inspiration,” she said.
