Our most-read story of the year was an in-depth profile for AgJournal of James Paterson, a 32-year-old fourth-generation farmer whose farming empire now spans 67,000ha across 11 properties in Victoria’s Western District and the NSW Riverina.
The Australian success story struck a chord with our readers, with one perfectly summing it up: “This is what farmers and people from the country are all about”.
2. Scientists say dingoes are just dogs

As Victoria undertook a review into the state’s wild dog control program, the taxonomy of the dingo became a prominent feature in discussions between farmers and animal activists, with the Australasian Mammal Taxonomy Consortium of scientists unanimously agreeing to classify the dingo, along with other dogs, as Canis familiaris.

6. CFA volunteers strike over renewables
June 19
The Country Fire Authority was one of many industry groups to take umbrage at what it called the Victorian Government’s “reckless renewables expansion”. As a result at least 24 CFA brigades went on strike in June, refusing to fight fires on land hosting high-voltage transmission lines, solar or wind farms.
7. Foreign-owned wind farms making millions in subsidies

Chinese, French and Spanish wind-farm operators were revealed to be earning up to $200m a year in renewable energy subsidies in Victoria, with the fees mostly collected as hidden charges on Victorian households’ and business’ electricity bills.

The Victorian agricultural community was in deep shock late in October when respected meat processing giant, businessman and racing enthusiast Colin McKenna died after a short illness.

The iconic Ingleby Homestead in Victoria’s Surf Coast region changed hands for the second time in four years after it was sold by Winchelsea local Georgie Thomson and her family in a seven-figure deal.
