A 19-year-old P-plater has lost his licence and been fined a hefty $2527 after being caught driving at extreme speeds on Wednesday.

A police motorcycle officer was conducting speed detection duties along the Sturt Highway, Gawler Belt, about 5.10pm when a Ford ute was clocked travelling at 169km/h in a 110km/h zone.

Police stopped the car and spoke to the driver, a 19-year-old P-plater from Hewett.

He lost his licence on the spot for six months,

Earlier on Wednesday, a Queensland man also lost his licence on the spot after he was caught 79km/h over the speed limit on the Eyre Highway near Ceduna.

About 2pm police detected a silver Mercedes sedan travelling at 189km/h in a 110km/h speed zone.

A 31-year-old man from Queensland was issued with an expiation notice for excessive speed totalling $1,997.

It comes after a P-plate driver allegedly driving at dangerous speeds in the Adelaide Hills was reported for drink driving on Tuesday.

The driver, a 31-year-old from Victoria, was detected 63km/h over the speed limit at Littlehampton, police say.

At 2.50pm, police say they were conducting speed detection duties on the South Eastern Freeway when they detected the Holden sedan travelling at 173km/h in a 110km/h speed zone.

The vehicle was stopped and the driver’s breath test provided a positive result of 0.101, police allege.

Despite checks on the driver’s licence showing he was a provisional licence holder, police say the man had three passengers in the vehicle.

The Victoria driver was reported for aggravated excess speed, excess speed, and drunk driving.

He was issued a six-month instant loss of licence and will attend court at a later date.
