Murraylands man, 70, charged after child abuse material allegedly found on phone
A Murraylands pensioner man faces court after an international tip-off led police to allegedly discover child abuse material on his phone.
A Murraylands man will face court on Monday after being allegedly found in possession of child abuse material.
The 70-year-old Mannum man was charged on May 30 with one count of possessing or controlling child abuse material obtained or accessed using a carriage service, an offence carrying a maximum penalty of 15 years in jail.
The charges came three days after officers from SAPOL and the Australian Federal Police seized a phone from his home for forensic examination.
Police will allege child abuse material was found on the phone.
The man was identified by the South Australia Joint Anti Child Exploitation Team (SA JACET) after an investigation into a report from the United States’ National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) about child abuse material being uploaded to a social media platform.
AFP Detective Sergeant Jarrod Cook said police were committed to protecting children.
“Children should not be used as commodities for the gratification of offenders,” Det Sgt Cook said.
“We cannot send a clearer message to offenders – if you engage in these horrific activities, you will be found, charged and prosecuted.”
The man will face Murray Bridge Magistrate’s Court on Monday.
