Murray John Miller, 24, from regional SA, sexually abused girl and shared the video, court told

A young girl was sexually abused by a young man who filmed the horrific attack – and then shared it to a Discord chatroom, a court has heard.

A young man with “dreams of joining the army” filmed himself sexually abusing a young girl and shared the videos online to a Discord chatroom, a court has heard.

Murray John Miller, 24, faced the District Court on Friday after police located two electronic devices upon his arrest that contained 300 files of child abuse material – including videos of infant children.

Miller, from regional SA, previously pleaded guilty to one count of sexually abusing a child, two counts of producing child exploitation material, two counts of disseminating child exploitation material, one count of possessing child exploitation material and once count of obtaining access to child exploitation material.

In a victim impact statement read to the court through the prosecution, the young girl’s mother detailed the “painful and devastating” impact the offending had on her family.

“I feel angry and sad that I’m in this position of writing this,” she wrote. “I still find it hard to understand how someone could do this.

“I felt numb, like I was walking around in a world I no longer understood. I live in constant fear of how this trauma will affect (my daughter) in the future and fear it happening again.

“Your actions have left lasting damage and I will never forgive you for what you did.”

Court documents released to The Advertiser show the offending occurred in multiple locations across South Australia.

The 24-year-old feral cat shooter was arrested and extradited to SA from NSW in July last year in relation to the offences, and has been remanded in custody since that date.

On Friday, prosecution submitted to Judge Geraldine Davidson that “sexual abuse against children has an insidious effect upon the community” and Miller “took advantage” of her vulnerability.

Defence counsel, for Miller, told the court their client was “still a young man” who was “remorseful” for his offending.

“Mr Miller had dreams of joining the army as he had an interest in all things military,” they said.

“He found various chatrooms and sites, and he started making connections online – ultimately where he was introduced to child exploitation material. Initially, he felt sickened by this, but it was also coupled with a perverse curiosity.

“He enjoyed talking to people and having a social outlet, and became involved in chatrooms where participants would talk of exploitative content. He admits to digitally capturing the extent of his offending and later this allowed the opportunity to share the information on Discord.”

Miller will return to court next month for sentencing.
