Aaron Shattock’s family issue new update as he remains hospitalised following excavator accident
The family of a former Port Adelaide and Brisbane Lions player has given the first update on his health since he was critically injured in a tractor rollover.
The family of former AFL player Aaron Shattock have issued a new statement on his health, as he continues to fight for life following an excavator accident last year.
In the statement, Shattock’s family said he remains sedated in the intensive care unit of Gold Coast University Hospital.
“He underwent surgery on his fractured ribs and broken/dislocated arm yesterday, which was successful. We are hopeful for his recovery and will provide further updates as he makes progress,” the statement read.
“Our family is deeply grateful for the ongoing support, love, and prayers from everyone. Your kindness means the world to us and continues to give us strength during this time.”
The statement is the first update on Shattock’s health since Christmas.
Mr Shattock was working on his property at Worongary on December 22 last year when he was pinned underneath an excavator in a freak accident.
The 44-year-old was transferred to GCUH in a critical condition, and placed in an induced coma.
Mr Shattock played 68 AFL games between 2000-2006 in stints at Brisbane and Port Adelaide, and was apart of the 2002 Lions premiership team.
The incident sent shockwaves through the AFL community, with former Brisbane teammate and current Carlton coach Michael Voss leading tributes to Shattock, describing him as a “ripping good fella”.
Shattock was born in SA, playing school football for Sacred Heart College and in the SANFL with Woodville-West Torrens before being drafted to Brisbane in 1998.
Former Woodville-West Torrens teammate Gavin Colville told The Advertiser last year that Shattock was “always smiling” and “up for a bit of fun” in their time as teammates.
Following his retirement from the AFL, Shattock relocated to the Gold Coast, where he spent over a decade playing and coaching at Labrador in the QAFL.
