When Karen Hood couldn’t find a heavy horse rescue 14 years ago, she created one.

Heavy Horse Heaven near Yass, NSW, has since become a lifeline for 347 draught horses, operating as Australia’s only specialist rescue for these gentle giants.

The journey began when Karen fulfilled a childhood dream, purchasing her first Clydesdale.

“I was driving out the gate and thought, she needs a friend,” Karen said.

“I looked around for a heavy horse to give a home to and realised I couldn’t find any heavy horse rescues.”

Fourteen years later, Heavy Horse Heaven now takes in horses from across eastern Australia, never turning away an animal in need if space allows.

“They come from all situations - people doing it tough financially, those who are terminally ill, family breakdowns,“ Karen said.

“We give horse owners peace knowing their animals will be looked after, and we give the horses the emotional and physical support they need.”

Operating from 74ha, Heavy Horse Heaven currently cares for 30 horses.

Each Sunday, between eight and 12 volunteers arrive to help with paddock and horse maintenance, forming what Karen calls “the most beautiful family of people”.

Personal loss has also shaped Karen’s mission.

After losing her daughter Jaymie in a car accident in 2013, Karen found solace in her work.

“She was one of my biggest supporters - I do it for her as well as myself,” Karen said.

“The horses give me a reason to get up in the morning.

“Some days are more difficult.”

Working part-time as a consultant for a government department while running her own embroidery business, Karen balances multiple commitments to keep Heavy Horse Heaven operating.

Despite the challenges, the registered charity continues through donations, fundraising efforts and rehoming fees.

“It takes a village,” she said, crediting her volunteers and supporters for making it all possible.

“Just seeing the smiles and relief on people’s faces when we can help them out - it’s the most magical thing.”
