WINNERS: Palgrove Charolais average 3.1kg per day
The winners of phase one of the Paddock to Palate competition have taken out the competition with a pen of six Charolais.
PALGROVE has taken out the 2019 Paddock to Palate 100 day weight gain competition.
The weight gain section is just the first phase in the three phase Paddock to Palate competition.
Palgrove won with a pen of six milk tooth Charolais steers that gained an average of 3.1kg per day.
“It was certainly a thrill to get a win,” Palgrove CEO, David Bondfield, said.
“We won the overall competition last year. We were runner up overall the year before that, and the year before that we won the weight gain phase.
“It’s nice to be able to benchmark your cattle against others in the industry.
“We’re really happy that our cattle keep performing under that system.”
The cattle will now go on to compete in the second and third phase of the competition. The second phase is the carcass competition, and in the third phase the meat is given an Meat Standards Australia grading.
The person with the most points over the three phases is the overall -Paddock to Palate winner.
“It’s designed to reflect the beef supply chain from producer to consumer,” Mr Bondfield said.
“There were around 40 teams of six, around 889 steers in the competition.
“It’s one of Australia’s biggest and draws people from across Queensland and NSW.”
The Palgrove cattle were purchased by the Regatta Hotel in Brisbane and will be served at the Boathouse restaurant throughout the Ekka in August.
