New flights from Darwin to Singapore are launching, with Qantas International chief executive Cam Wallace declaring 2025 a “year of growth” for airlines in the Territory.
On Sunday, Qantas’ inaugural Darwin-Singapore service was set to depart, marking the first direct Qantas flight between the two cities since 2006.
Qantas has committed to adding more than 70,000 seats between Darwin and Singapore, with Boeing 737-800 aircraft flights to operate weekly on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays.
Mr Wallace said the increased number of flights would support those visiting the Territory, as well as leaving.
“We’re delighted to be offering Territorians another international connection and providing a faster and more seamless way to travel with Qantas to Asia and Europe,” he said.
“The new flights will provide more travel options both for locals and international tourists and will also strengthen the important trade and business links between Australian and Singapore.”
Mr Wallace said the new route would open up more options for those keen to explore the Territory.
The Sunday flight, which offered a $519 economy return sale, was hailed by Trade, Business and Asian Relations minister Robyn Cahill as a “significant milestone” for Darwin.
“The new flights will benefit locals wanting to travel overseas and also connect our ever-growing cohort of business travellers with international markets,” she said.
“Qantas’ commitment to the Territory reinforces our profile as a thriving global city and we’ll continue our partnership with them to grow demand to and from the Territory.”
Tourism Minister Marie-Clare Boothby said the additional flight routes made the NT a gateway not just to Australia, but the rest of the world.
Executive general manager – Airports, Airport Development Group, Rob Porter, said the launch was a significant milestone for the NT and a testament to its growing importance as a gateway to Asia.
“We remain committed to working with our airline partners to open up Northern Australia, creating more travel options and delivering economic benefits for our community.”
One such partner is Singapore Tourism Board’s executive director, International Group HQ & Oceania, Oliver Chong, who said with Singapore fewer than five hours from Darwin, it was the perfect choice for a quick break for Territorians.
