MOVE over man cave – “she sheds” are the new must-have lifestyle trend thanks to people spending more time at home during Covid and a booming real estate market.
Impeccably styled backyard sheds with a private and cosy vibe are being spruiked on social media platforms such as Pinterest and Instagram.
It has fuelled a huge spike in shed orders with those living in urban areas craving extra space while cooped up at home.
One Gold Coaster who jumped on the trend early is Lesa Lambert, who custom built her 3m by 3m “hobby hut” last year during the Covid lockdowns.
Ms Lambert makes candles and whitewash furniture in her retreat.
“I actually had a dream one night last year that I walked down the stairs of our house, out of the front door and to my own ‘hobby hut’ shed,” she said.
“I mentioned it to my husband, Greg, who is a concreter, the next day and he said ‘let’s do it’.
“It’s a total girl cave and has enough room for a queen-sized bed and bedside tables.”
The hobby hut can be converted into an office or guest bedroom when people visit.
Easy Shed head of purchasing Daniel Rutland said people with a flair for creativity had helped the backyard shed boom.
“We have seen a 450 per cent growth in the past 12 months alone,” Mr Rutland said. “Shed sales are going through the roof.
“The biggest uptake of sheds has been in the cities, where space is premium.”
Backyard shed producers have benefited from more people staying at home during the pandemic, he added.
“We are seeing sheds being repurposed as separate living spaces, guest rooms, man caves, she-sheds, aviaries, home offices, gyms, studios – even home distilleries, home cinemas and pool rooms.
“We often see windows put in, even sky lights and sound proofing.
“One guy turned his shed into an astronomy room, where the entire roof retracted back to provide viewing for his huge telescope.”
A standard 3m by 3m can be assembled in one day with a power drill.
Australia Post’s Inside Australian Online Shopping report revealed 22.9 per cent of all online purchases over the past 12 months were from the home and garden category.
