NORTHWEST Healthcare, the largest healthcare industry landowner in Australia, is planning a $250m health precinct at Coomera.

The Canadian giant’s Australian arm has bought a $10.34m site on the corner of Foxwell Rd and George Alexander Way and handy to the site of a planned Coomera public hospital.

It has started work on master-planning an integrated health precinct on the 2ha site and is poised to start discussions with the Gold Coast City Council.

The land has been bought from Brisbane’s Silverstone Developments, which in February mooted a mixed-use project on the land, one that included three six-level apartment buildings.

Alex Belcastro, medical precincts vice-president for the NorthWest Healthcare Properties REIT, yesterday said it was intended to have the $50m-plus first stage underway next year.

It would be a medical office building with a day surgery, with other stages, including a private hospital, to follow every three to five years,” said Ms Belcastro. “We will be there for a considerable time.

“The Coomera project will be designed with the flexibility to cater for a wide range of public and private services, with consultation with Gold Coast Health set to be ongoing.”

Ms Belcastro said NorthWest would talk to several private operators with the aim of seeding services ahead of the commissioning of the new public hospital.

“Our strategic investment in Coomera is testament to a continued investment in southeast Queensland, with five developments between Brisbane and the Gold Coast in the planning stage. They include a landmark innovation centre in the Gold Coast Health and Knowledge Precinct linked to Healthscope’s Gold Coast Private hospital, which will cater for clinical trials, spinal robotics and research.”

The planned Coomera public hospital is earmarked for a 13.5ha site in George Alexander Way, land bounded by the Coomera railway station. It will provide emergency, medical, surgical, childrens, maternity and supporting services.

In 2019, NorthWest sold the Pacific Private medical building in Southport for $40m, but still has a healthy Gold Coast property portfolio. It takes in the Palm Beach Currumbin Clinic, the Southport Private Hospital, and the Gold Coast Surgery Centre in Southport.

NorthWest Healthcare Australian Property is the trustee of the Vital Healthcare Investment Trust, the only specialist owner of healthcare property listed on the New Zealand Stock Exchange.
