A historic house on the Burleigh headland has sold for an eye-watering amount of money as a Father’s Day gift with an unusual twist.

AN HISTORIC house on the Burleigh headland has sold for an eye-watering amount of money as a Father’s Day gift with an unusual twist.

The Rudd Street property was snapped up for more than $2 million over the weekend by a Burleigh dad. Rather than receive a gift for Father’s Day, he turned it around and instead gave it to his daughter.

Built by the Brisbane-based Moneypenny family in the late 1940s, it is the first time the house has changed hands.

Kingfisher Realty sales specialist Yasmin Spencer said the auction attracted four registered bidders, one phone bidder and a crowd of more than 30 people.

“While some dads might receive a pair of socks for Father’s Day, he has turned the tables by gifting his daughter a home atop the beautiful Burleigh Headland,” she said.

“As a Burleigh local, he appreciates the value of beachside property and is extremely pleased to have secured such a prime piece of land.

“It’s fair to say this is one Father’s Day weekend both dad and daughter won’t forget in a hurry.”

The site was originally bought by Eric and May Moneypenny as a place to park their caravan while on holidays.

The four-bedroom house grew from a campsite into a house and became a place six generations of the family spent time.

Among them was the now-79-year-old Pamela Mitchell, the daughter of Mr and Mrs Moneypenny who said it was bittersweet to say goodbye to the famous house.

“The house is a tribute not only to dad’s skill and ability but his love for mum,” she said.

“Dad just adored our mother and he built the house for her.

“It was originally just four walls and we all slept in one room on camp stretchers.

“I remember my uncle and cousin helping dig out the foundations. There were no drills in those days - they just used picks, shovels and wheelbarrows.”
