A man was left fighting for his life on Monday morning after a horrific two-vehicle crash between a truck an a car near a notorious one-lane bridge on the New England Highway.

Initial reports indicated a truck and vehicle collided on the New England Highway at Cooyar about 8am on Monday.

Queensland Police spokeswoman said a utility and truck collided near the one-lane Cooyar bridge.

Queensland Fire Department crews went into action with hydraulic cutting gear to remove the man from the vehicle.

Queensland Ambulance paramedics assisted fire and rescue crews in removing the patient from the vehicle, who was assessed by paramedics at the scene for possibly critical chest injuries.

A QAS spokeswoman said a rescue helicopter was initially called in but later stood down and the male patient was taken to Toowoomba Hospital for further treatment.

The driver of the truck was reported uninjured.

A Darling Downs Health spokesman confirmed on Monday afternoon the man remained in a serious but stable condition at Toowoomba Hospital.

Queensland roads have witnessed 120 fatal crashes as of June 15, with data showing these fatalities are only increasing.

Queensland Police had blocked off the highway in both directions for a period of time, diverting traffic either side of the bridge before reopening both lanes around noon.
