Some rain for Victoria but north waits for ‘a good drink’

FARMS in central Victoria, from Bendigo to Echuca, and in parts of the Wimmera have failed to receive a decent autumn break.

And as temperatures drop coming into the first week of winter, in many areas new pasture growth wanes by the day.

Department of Economic Development seasonal risk agronomist Dale Grey said “most of the northern grain areas are in need of a good drink” following only light and spasmodic rain in May.

“Heavier clay soils of the Wimmera haven’t had a break of note either,” Mr Grey said.

“Even the North East hasn’t had anything significant for a month and could do with a rain. South West Victoria has had a late but confident start in May.”

But some good falls were recorded in the Mallee last week. Hopetoun, Beulah and Rainbow got more than 20mm.

“Many dry-sown crops across the state are emerging on the light rains received but need a good rain soon to provide a buffer against dry spells and frosts,” Mr Grey said.

“Crops yet to emerge will be slower to grow when rain finally arrives and there is the risk that the reduced growing season ... may impede yield potential and pasture growth.”

Victorian No-Till Farmers Association executive officer Kerry Grigg said the Wimmera was still incredibly dry, despite receiving 9-12mm last week.

“We’re certainly looking for more because last year it was such a dry finish there was no moisture in the profile at all,” Ms Grigg said.

At Swan Hill, farmer Ross Watson finished sowing this week but said there was no stored soil moisture so crops would rely on winter and spring rains.

In the state’s south, Wickliffe farmer George Burdett has also finished sowing.

Despite rainfall for the year to date being 25mm below average, he was “very comfortable” with the conditions given the reliability of the region.
