Ray Martin launches attack on No voters

Australian TV royalty Ray Martin has ripped into No voters in front of a crowd of Voice supporters, suggesting they were “dinosaurs and d**kheads”, too lazy to perfrom a basic Google search.

Addressing the crowd of cheering Yes voters at the West Says Yes event on September 28 at the Factory Theatre in Marrickville, in Sydney’s Inner West, Martin did not hold back.

“If you don’t know, find out what you don’t know,” he told the audience.

“What that excellent slogan is saying, is if you’re a dinosaur or a d**khead who can’t be bothered reading, then vote No.”

Martin argued that No voters kept begging Prime Minister Anthony Albanese for the details of the referendum but the details “could not be simpler”.

“At this stage of the game, the details simply don’t matter. They never did matter, honestly. They’re irrelevant,” he said.

“Over the next 10 to 20 years, no matter who is in government, the details will change, inevitably. As will the members of the Voice delegation from around Australia, according to the needs, the priorities and the policies that are meant to close that bloody gap.

“You can’t write all that in the constitution in 2023.”

He explained that Indigenous communities across the country would have a host of issues that required attention and stressed how they were likely to continue to change over time.

Different regions would need help with their “special problems” for generations to come – that could be running water, education, or ending rheumatic fever, he said.

“It’s a big country with lots of different demands and needs. How do you give the details of all that in the Australian constitution? Of course you don’t.”

Martin joined Mr Albanese as a speaker at the event, where about 500 supporters were delivered speeches and performances from the Hoodoo Gurus and Dog Trumpet.

The PM was also joined on stage at the packed theatre by Yes23 campaign co-chair Rachel Perkins and Australian of the Year Local Hero Amar Singh.

The founder of charity Turbans 4 Australia, Mr Singh was a “secret guest” at the event.

He was in the midst of a 25,000km journey around Australia encouraging people from diverse backgrounds to support the referendum.

The night before the event, more than 1000 people turned out to a No campaign rally in Brisbane, headed up by Warren Mundine and Senator Jacinta Nampijinpa Price.

Senator Price told the cheering crowd the country should never have been subjected to “such a divisive referendum”.

“Our Prime Minister should never have put us on this path in the first place,” she said. “For some time, we as a nation have come under attack from those who want to believe that we’re made up of two kinds of people, that we are either oppressed, or we oppressors.

“We’re told we’re a terrible, racist country … these are absolute lies.”

The crowd cheered as Senator Price said the referendum represented a “line in the sand” where people wouldn’t be subject to “gaslighting or manipulation”.

Outside the conference, protesters from either side of the campaign came to a head, screaming abuse at each other on the street.

Yes supporters chanted “No pride, no pride, no pride in genocide” as people exited the building, with No supporters appearing to taunt them from a distance.

“How do you spell racist? LNP!” the protesters cried on occasion.

Security at the convention centre and police formed a barrier between the clashing groups. No arrests were made.
