NAB will cut opening hours to three hours per day at 114 “smaller regional branches” across Australia.

Opening hours will change to a standardised 9.30am to 12.30pm at the affected branches across five states, including 38 in NSW and 28 in Victoria.

However, NAB says the there will be no cuts to jobs and the bankers will maintain the same number of working hours. These bankers will split their time between over-the-counter service, digital or phone banking, and application processing.

The new operational hours will come into effect from Monday, August 17.

The Weekly Times has been told most branches will remain open on the same days as they currently trade, except for Mullumbimby and West Wyalong in NSW and Mundubbera in Queensland, which will move from four days to five days a week.

NAB group executive personal banking Rachel Slade said that on average a quarter of transactions take place between 9.30am and 10.30am in its regional branches.

“Through this new model we can continue to be there to serve our customers and have meaningful conversations while also adapting to the way our customers are now banking,” she said.

“Our colleagues will learn new skills to support customers in new ways, including on the phone and online chat, which presents the opportunity for our bankers to work remotely.

“We think this move will strike that balance, keeping the doors open at 114 branches around the country, providing the opportunity for around 300 bankers to learn skills while we continue to serve our customers well.”

There are 270 staff at the 114 branches, according to the Finance Sector Union.

According to NAB, more than 90 per cent of its customer interactions take place online or by phone, while over-the-counter transactions reduced by a quarter in the past year.
