GRAB your umbrella, Victoria is going to see some rain.

There’s a chance of flash flooding and thunderstorms across the state with humid conditions expected to bring between 20 and 30mm of rain in most west and central districts today.

About 10mm of rain is expected for Gippsland and the far north west.

Falls of up to 50mm are possible, the Bureau of Meteorology said, as a rain band moves from the west towards central Victoria in the afternoon.

“The heaviest rain will probably be in the late morning to early afternoon,” senior forecaster Phil King said.

“As the low moves away we’ll see showers continue into Wednesday and a clearing trend on Thursday.”

Today’s forecast follows disappointing rainfall over the weekend, with the state receiving less than half expected.

There were predictions on Friday that Victoria would see its largest downpour since the drought broke in 2009.

Up to 100mm of rain was expected to fall by in the state’s north yesterday in a four-day event, while the south was set to get 50 to 70mm.

But clear skies on Sunday saw people pull out their beach towels rather than their umbrellas.

Bureau of Meteorology senior forecaster Terry Ryan said the weekend’s rainfall was “a bit disappointing” and that it was difficult to predict exactly how much rain would fall.
