Berejiklian says new 50km border zone in NSW reinstated by Friday
After weeks of angst for NSW and Victorian residents living along the states’ border, a 50km border zone will be reinstated on Friday.
FRIDAY will mark the beginning of a new 50km border zone that extends on either side of the NSW and Victorian border.
Ahead of her visit to the border town of Albury today, NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian said the new border region and “border region resident” permit would come into effect at 12.01am on September 4.
“We are working hard to reduce the angst and frustration caused by this border closure,” Ms Berejiklian said.
She said the reinstated border region was in response to the reduced risk of community transmission in regional Victoria.
The new permit will allow a resident living within the border zone to enter NSW to:
OBTAIN necessary goods or services
FOR care or other compassionate reasons
TO attend work or obtain educational services.
NSW border region residents are allowed to enter Victoria for the reasons outlined in the permit, but must not travel to any part of Victoria outside of the border region or is a COVID-19 area of concern.
A Victorian border region resident is allowed to enter NSW for the reasons stipulated in the permit, but must not travel beyond the 50km border limit or enter the state if they have travelled to a restricted area such as Greater Melbourne within 14 days.
NSW Deputy Leader John Barilaro said it was clear changes to the status quo needed to be made after visiting Albury-Wodonga last week and hearing of the families and business owners who have been seriously impacted by the tough border closure.
“In listening to the community, it was immediately clear that we needed to make some changes, which included extending mobility within the 50km border region, and today the NSW Government is doing just that,” he said.
Ms Berejiklian is expected to announced further details about the new restrictions at 11am.
