Mirboo North dairy farmer’s widow shares her story on trauma and grief
The widow of a dairy farmer tragically killed in the violent storms at Mirboo North 12 months ago, has spoken of her journey through trauma and grief.
Fiona Baker’s life changed forever on February 13, 2024, when her husband Bruce Manintveld, a dairy farmer from Mirboo North, was tragically killed in the violent storms that ripped through the Gippsland region on that fateful day.
Bruce was bringing his Jersey cows into the milking shed when a section of shed roof, torn loose by the storm, fatally struck him.
Fiona performed CPR until help arrived but the coroner’s report confirmed that Bruce had passed instantly from the impact.
To remember and honour him 12 months on, Fiona bravely recounted Bruce’s story, which features in this year’s Gippsland Jersey calendar celebrating the resilience, grit and spirit of farmers while raising awareness about mental health in rural communities.
She remains deeply grateful for the incredible kindness from family and friends who stepped in to milk cows, care for the herd and help guide decision-making on the farm while she navigated unimaginable heartache.
“How long does this journey take? Some days it’s the gift that keeps on giving,” Fiona said.
“You think you get past some things and then something jumps up and triggers it and that is ongoing.
