Updated, May 21: An elderly woman has died from her injuries almost a week on from being struck by an alleged drug driver in Palmerston.
The 80-year-old woman was riding her mobility scooter when she was allegedly hit by a car near a Palmerston shopping centre on Thursday causing serious injuries to her leg, pelvis and ribs.
She was taken to Royal Darwin Hospital and has since died as a result of those injuries.
The 43-year-old man allegedly driving the vehicle returned a positive drug test at the time of the incident and was arrested.
Police said he’s currently assisting police with inquiries with charges expected to follow.
The latest death brings the total lives lost on Territory roads in 2025 to 16, compared to 22 at this time last year.
It also marks the seventh death so far in May.
Initial, May 15: An elderly woman riding a mobility scooter was allegedly struck by a car near a Palmerston shopping centre about 10am on Thursday, suffering serious injuries.
The 43-year-old man driving the vehicle remained at the scene where he allegedly returned a positive roadside drug test and was arrested.
The 80-year-old woman was allegedly thrown from her scooter as she was using the pedestrian crossing on Temple Terrace, suffering multiple injuries to her leg, pelvis and ribs, NT Police said.
She was taken to Royal Darwin Hospital in a serious but stable condition.
It is understood the car allegedly struck the woman at a crossing near the roundabout that separates Palmerston Shopping Centre and Oasis Shopping Village.
Police said the Temple Terrace outbound lane remained closed to traffic, with motorists asked to avoid the area where possible.
