Thousands of cattle went under the hammer at CQLX on Monday for the first Kubota Weaner and Feeder Sale of the year, with the sale being dubbed one of the biggest in the event’s history.

The 2023 sale recorded a total yarding of 6585 head made up of 4746 steers and 1839 heifers which had a 100 per cent clearance.

Ray White Rural Gracemere livestock agent Gary Wendt said the sale was one of the biggest in about 50 years.

“It’s probably one of the biggest in the last 40 or 50 years, that we know of, talking to some of the older fellas at the yards,” he said.

“There was 100 per cent clearance and good competition from local and outside buyers.

“The sale went very well, there were prices that were about 20 to 30 cents dearer in spots across the board.”

Quality lines of weaners came from all across Central Queensland including Nebo, Biloela, Middlemount, Marlborough, Yeppoon and Dululu.

Mr Wendt said one of the things that made the sale successful was the quality lines of cattle.

“People can come here and, if they want, buy six decks and be confident they’re buying a good run of cattle,” he said.

Despite the national market recording plummeting prices so far this year, Mr Wendt said the local cattle market had been consistent across the past few weeks.

Included in some of the highlights of the sale were some Brangus steers from Dalma weighing 470kg which sold for 296 cents per kilo to return $1393 per head.

Simbrah cross steers from Banana weighing 305kg sold for 340 cents per kilo to return $1040 per head.

A pen of Charbray heifers from Thangool weighing 428kg sold for 288 cents per kilo to return $1233 per head.

Another pen of Charbray heifers from Miriam Vale weighing 375kg sold for 292 cents per kilo to return $1095 per head.

The next Kubota Weaner and Feeder will be on July 3 at CQLX.
