Cyclone to bring more storms for Darwin, coldest January day recorded
Darwin residents are experiencing the coldest January day on record, after waking up to a fast moving storm cell caused by Cyclone Tiffany.
THE Bureau of Meterology have said Darwin may be experiencing the coldest January day on record.
“At midday the temperature was just 22.8 degrees, which is almost three degrees less than the coldest recorded day,” manager for community engagement Jude Scott said.
She said the next coldest January day was recorded in 1989 and got down to 25.7 degrees.
It comes as residents in the city woke to a fast moving storm cell on Wednesday morning.
Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) senior forecaster Mr Lynch said Cyclone Tiffany will bring heavy rains and storms to the region but also cooler temperatures.
“It moved through fairly quickly. didn’t produce a lot of rain though,” he said.
“We had about 30-50mm across the city with the best rainfall recorded at the Botanical Gardens where there was 52mm.”
Mr Lynch said the city could expect further storms in the afternoon and night.
On Wednesday the temperature was a chilly 22.2 in Darwin but Mr Lynch said that could drop further in the coming days.
“We are having a chilly one and if it continues this way we might actually break the coldest January day on record.”
Residents of rural areas of the Top End also woke to find their homes without power, with Power Water Corp confirming the news on Twitter.

are without power, please know we are working to identify the cause and restore your service as soon as we possibly can.
Cyclone Tiffany made landfall on Wednesday morning at Port Roper before tracking over Ngukurr just before midday.
Mr Lynch said BOM was seeing fairly low pressure which had fallen below 990 hectopascals.
“We know that. That’s a sign of a tropical cyclone nearby.”
Rivers across the top end remain on flood watch as Cyclone Tiffany brings a low pressure system to the regions around Katherine.
