Ulupna Pastoral sells tractors and farm machinery in move to Case brand

Danny Thomas’ Ulupna Pastoral Company has put a lot of second-hand machinery on the market.

ULUPNA Pastoral Company is offloading dozens of tractors and other equipment accumulated from its buying spree of farms over the past two years, replacing them with the Case brand.

Ulupna Pastoral, owned by former CBRE real estate agent Danny Thomas and West Australian farmer Giovanni “John” Nicoletti, has bought more than 60 farms in northern Victoria and southern NSW of a combined area of about 10,000 hectares.

Mr Thomas said about 10-15 of the properties were bought on a walk-in, walk-out basis, which included farm machinery and other farm equipment, such as hay making and tillage equipment, feed mixer wagons and spray units.

On offer is 89 pieces of equipment, including 23 tractors, five headers, nine augers and seven mowers.

He said they were selling the equipment because some was “not fit for purpose” for a large scale farming operation.

“Case have offered us a deal to replace everything,” he said.

“They do the finance and we have a service agreement in place.”

Mr Thomas said the sale of the machinery was also driven by a “hot” market at the moment for second-hand equipment.

According to Bryan McNeilly, of selling agent Manheim, there was a massive shortage of tractors at the moment.

“There’s no new tractors and no second-hand ones in the yards,” Mr McNeilly said.

“That’s partly due to new machinery production being hit by COVID.

“New tractors have gone up in price by 30 per cent over the past two years and the used market is becoming more buoyant.

“Some of the newer (Ulupna) tractors could go past new prices.”

Ulupna Pastoral Company spent tens of millions of dollars buying dairy, grain and beef properties in northern Victoria and southern NSW.

Mr Thomas said the area was “some of the most versatile farmland in the country”.

“If you have got land, water and sunshine, you can choose whatever commodity you want to produce.

“We have been selling our cattle down in this extraordinary market at the moment.

“We’ve got 10,000 sheep and we are doing a lot of cropping.”
