The town, 345km from Adelaide near the South Australian-Victorian border, will be celebrating the South East Field Days’ 40th year.

“That’s why we’ve got all the extra entertainment,” Secretary Lyn Crosby said.

“We also have things to reflect the 40th year.”

The special attractions include a memorabilia display and “Remember When” retro fashion parade, featuring clothing from the 1950s though to the 1970s.

“Normally with our fashion parade we use clothing from exhibitors, but this year it’s vintage,” Ms Crosby said.

Long-time Lucindale Lions Club member Jeff Davey was there when it all began in 1978 and has watched the Field Days grow over the years.

“Those days we had about 40-plus Lions members and somebody floated the idea of having a Field Day,” he said. “We thought to get a crowd we’d run a tractor pull.

“Five hundred people came to the first Field Day, and we’ve gone from 500 to about 22,000 today — and the town still only has about 400 people.”

The memorabilia display in Elad Shed will reflect the evolution of the Field Days, with old photos, newspaper clippings and hand-drawn maps.

“Machinery’s got a lot bigger and more complicated since then,” Mr Davey said.

“It’s all computer controlled now ... in those days they were basic tractors.”

These days the Field Days take place at Yakka Park on 20ha.

Event-goers can expect interactive Aussie FMX and fishing demonstrations, working dog puppies and the Carlton Draught horses.

“We’re so excited,” Ms Crosby said of the famous Clydesdale horses.

“They mostly do Victoria, but will pop over the border which is nice. We get quite a lot of people from Western Victoria popping over.”

Ms Crosby encourages everyone to check out this year’s Field Days.

“There’s a lot to do, good food to eat and a really good time to be had,” she said.
