The bull sale that’s set the pace this autumn

A Poll Hereford has stunned the southern beef world by making $96,000 at a sale this week. See where the action happened and who paid the big money.

‘We need some common sense’: Business will be ‘very concerned’ over IR changes

A Poll Hereford bull that made $96,000 was secured over the phone as the new owner left his boilermaker apprenticeship class to bid.

Tom Baulch from the Jaclinton Hereford stud at Warrnambool paid the big sum for Yavenvale Trump Card T350, a 22-month-old homozygous sire.

The stud is operated by Tom, his sister Indi and mother Jacquie, and the purchase is “a landmark event”, he said.

“This is the most we have ever paid for a bull,” Mr Baulch said.

“We have been using a lot of good Injemira genetics for four or five years and two years ago we bought a Mawarra sire and we didn’t buy a bull last year.

“We wanted to make sure we got another good bull to add to our breeding program.”

Jaclinton was established about 12 years ago and sells about 25 bulls a year.

Their new purchase will be used within their own herd, and will possibly offer semen sales from the expensive sire.

Mr Baulch may have bid over the phone to buy Trump Card, but he had travelled up to southern NSW to look at bulls about a week ago, and the Yavenvale sire stood out.

“I was impressed with the overall display of bulls at Yavenvale and how even they were but this bull really stood out,” he said.

“There were a few stars next to his name when we inspected the line-up.”

Mr Baulch then went home and looked carefully at the bull’s pedigree to find its dam was a donor cow for the Yavenvale stud, while the sire was a fresh New Zealand sire Limehills Streaker that had not been widely used in the beef world in Australia.

“We were keen to get those fresh genetics into our stud and to offer to our clients,” he said.

“Aside from his pedigree though, he just has sire appeal and carries himself well and the fact he has great data is a real bonus.”

Trump Card T350 has Breedplan values of +2.5 for birthweight, +112 for 600-day growth, +2.5 for intramuscular fat and +5.9 for eye muscle area.

Mr Baulch was philosophical about the big price paid and said he had been expecting the bull to make a lot of money.

“I did have to excuse myself from my boilermaker class but I don’t think they realised what I was doing,” he said.

The underbidder for Trump Card T350 was the Newcomen Hereford stud at Ensay, which was one of two buyers that paid $50,000 for a Yarram Park Hereford bull earlier in the week.
