The 14-year-old ram breeder who is taking on Poll Dorsets
Low prime lamb prices have not affected sales for this teenage breeder, who has sold half his ram offering in his first year of business.
At age 14, Poll Dorset breeder Sam Williams is not put off by the current dip in lamb prices.
He sees a big future not only for the breed but also for his own stud operation, LeMar.
His stud may only be two years old but he’s selling his own rams already and of the 19 he’s had on offer, 10 have already sold.
It’s a great effort from the young enthusiast who lives and breathes Poll Dorsets alongside his other love – cricket.
And he’s just as keen to hit a six in sheep breeding as he is to clear the boundaries when he dons his whites.
Sam’s goal is to build up his flock of Poll Dorset ewes, which currently sits at 59, to more than 100 and later on, to have his own on-property sale.
“It would be nice to have enough numbers and enough quality to warrant an on-property sale,” Sam said.
“I will just keep things ticking away, working towards that.”
Right now though, he hopes prime lamb breeders will continue to commit to buying quality genetics even though lamb prices are not high.
He’s taken his sheep to two local shows in southern NSW and said the feedback had been strong.
The displays had even attracted interest from US sheep breeders, who Sam said “came back four times to look at the sheep”.
Sam’s mother, Marita Williams, helps Sam out with the displays but said she had to redirect queries to her son when people asked about the sheep.
She said once they started to talk to him, it became obvious that his passion and understanding belied his young years.
Sam still has nine rams for sale from this year’s offering, but expects these to sell soon.
“I am really pleased that I only started the stud two years ago and now I have rams to sell and they are selling,” he said.
